In 1993, Carla Stangenberg moved to NYC, began studying theater at NYU, and practicing yoga at Jivamukti Yoga Center. At Tisch School of the Arts, she studied developmental movement with Wendell Beavers, whom she considers her foremost movement teacher.
In 2000, Carla was certified to teach at Cyndi Lee’s OM Yoga Center, learning alignment-based vinyasa and Buddhist philosophy. She has since studied with Rodney Yee, Amy Matthews, Sarah Powers, and many Iyengar teachers. Carla is also a Traditional Reiki Master.
Carla has participated in 14 silent meditation retreats in the Buddhist tradition and is excited to co-teach a silent Meditation and Yoga Retreat weekend at Garrison Institute with Peter Doobinin in September 2017.
Since 2005, Carla has been the director of Jaya Yoga Center, where she has taught since 2000. In 2010, she and Ramit Kreitner opened Jaya Yoga East. They aim to serve a new community and celebrated their first teacher training graduation in April 2012. In Fall 2017, they will offer Jaya’s first 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training.
As a teacher, Carla creates space for deep self-investigation. She also enjoys chanting, philosophy, photography, visiting family, and the occasional performance.
Carla was recently interviewed by the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society. One correction: the Jivamukti she refers to was the one on 2nd Avenue, not the Lafayette Street location.
